I worry about the wealth story being sold<\/h2>\n

I spend a lot of time listening to people talk about money. Not just about what they earn, spend or save, but about the meaning money has in their lives. Money is rarely just about numbers. It tends to be tangled up with beliefs around safety, identity, success, self-worth and our hopes for the future.<\/p>\n

Lately, I have found myself becoming increasingly uncomfortable with some of the messaging that surrounds us in the financial world. I see a growing number of financial commentators, coaches, influencers and social media \u2018experts\u2019 talking about creating wealth and building a better future for ourselves and our families. Much of it is well intentioned and some of it can be genuinely useful. My concern is not that people want others to become financially secure. Of course they do. What concerns me is the story sitting underneath much of the advice.<\/p>\n

There seems to be a recurring message that if we truly care about our children or future generations, then we should be doing more. We should be building more wealth, creating more income streams, investing more, accumulating more assets and creating larger inheritances. The assumption can begin to creep in that being a responsible parent or a successful person somehow means continuously increasing financial<\/em> wealth.<\/p>\n

I completely understand where this comes from. Financial security matters and money gives people options that they may not otherwise have. I see every day the difference that having financial stability can make to someone’s life and emotional wellbeing. I am certainly not arguing that money does not matter.<\/p>\n

What I question, and I said this at the end of my presentation at PAADS<\/a> this May, is whether we have become so focused on money itself that we have started to narrow our understanding of what wealth really<\/em> means.<\/p>\n

I am interested in patterns and beliefs because behaviour around money rarely appears from nowhere.<\/h6>\n

Many people already carry deeply rooted beliefs from childhood: that money runs out, that life is financially difficult, that security is fragile, or that you have to constantly strive and work harder to deserve comfort and stability. Then we place people into an environment where social media repeatedly tells them that they are behind, that they should have started investing sooner, that they need multiple income streams and that there is always something else they should be doing.<\/p>\n

None of these ideas are necessarily wrong in isolation but when we hear these messages day after day, the emotional effect can become something much bigger. It reinforces a constant sense that there may never quite be enough. I find most people can\u2019t define ‘enough’ when first asked.<\/p>\n

I see people with good incomes who still feel anxious. I see people with savings who still do not feel secure. I see people reaching goals they once dreamed of, only to immediately move the goalposts and create another target in the distance. The pursuit of financial wellbeing (especially if it is based on someone else’s formula) can sometimes become a pursuit that never allows people to actually feel well.<\/p>\n

I also find myself increasingly drawn towards ideas of abundance that exist outside of highly individualistic and consumer-driven cultures. I am not suggesting that other societies have all the answers, nor am I romanticising communities that may have their own challenges and inequalities.<\/p>\n

However, there are many cultures where wellbeing has historically been measured in broader ways than individual accumulation.<\/h6>\n

Ideas such as shared responsibility, community, reciprocity, collective support and interdependence can sit alongside financial security rather than being replaced by it. There can be a greater sense that wealth exists not only in ownership but also in relationships and connection. There is often an understanding that people survive and thrive because they support each other, rather than because each individual endlessly accumulates more.<\/p>\n

Even nature offers a different perspective. Nature is built around ecosystems and balance. Forests do not survive because one tree takes everything for itself. Systems flourish because resources circulate, because there is cooperation and because abundance often comes through connection rather than competition.<\/p>\n

Author Robin Wall Kimmerer<\/a> wrote a beautiful book called The Serviceberry if this idea has you wanting more!<\/p>\n

Perhaps that is why I find myself asking different questions these days. Instead of asking people how much they want to accumulate, I am more interested in asking what kind of life they are trying to create.<\/p>\n

Because wealth, at least to me, increasingly looks like having time. It looks like having choices and freedom. It looks like meaningful relationships, good health, connection to community and feeling able to enjoy life rather than constantly preparing for it.<\/p>\n

Money absolutely plays a part in creating those things. But money itself is not the destination.<\/h6>\n

I wonder whether one of the most valuable things we can pass on to future generations is not simply larger inheritances or bigger investment accounts. Perhaps it is a healthier relationship with money itself. Perhaps it is helping people understand that their worth is not measured entirely by productivity or accumulation, and helping them decide what “enough” looks like before they spend a lifetime chasing “more”.<\/p>\n
