In reality, spending addiction usually goes much deeper than enjoying new things or treating yourself occasionally. Through trauma-informed work and supporting people in recovery, I have learned that addictive behaviours are often less about the thing itself and more about the emotional role that thing is playing.

Many people use something to regulate emotions. For some it may be alcohol, gambling, food or work; for others it can become spending. The purchase itself is not always what somebody is seeking. Often it is the temporary sense of relief, distraction, excitement or comfort that comes with it. Money behaviours frequently have roots in our experiences, our emotional needs and the coping mechanisms we have developed over time.

It is also important not to confuse spending addiction with impulsive spending.

Some people, particularly those with ADHD or other forms of neurodiversity, may struggle more with impulse regulation or seek dopamine through novelty and reward. They may make unplanned purchases or find themselves spending before thinking things through. That does not automatically mean addiction is present. The difference is often found in the emotional attachment to the behaviour and whether somebody feels trapped in a repeating cycle that continues despite consequences.

What are the key signs of a spending addiction?

One of the biggest signs is shame and secrecy. People experiencing spending addiction often become very good at hiding what is happening. Purchases may be concealed, emails deleted, parcels hidden or spending minimised when speaking to loved ones. There can be a growing feeling that if somebody truly knew what was happening, they would judge them.

Another common sign is that spending starts to happen with little regard for other financial responsibilities. Essential bills, debts or important commitments can begin to feel secondary to the urge to spend. Someone may fully understand the impact of their actions and still feel unable to stop themselves.

The emotional element is often significant. Spending may become a way to cope with difficult feelings such as stress, loneliness, anxiety, sadness or low self-worth. The purchase acts almost like a temporary emotional escape route.

Interestingly, many people with spending addiction are not actually attached to the things they buy.

This is one of the areas that people often find surprising. Somebody may spend large amounts and then barely use what they have purchased. The item sits unopened in its packaging, gets pushed into a cupboard or forgotten about completely. The emotional reward came from the anticipation, the purchase and the momentary rush, not necessarily from owning the item itself.

Repeatedly promising yourself that you will stop and then finding yourself back in the same cycle can also be an important sign. People often describe feeling determined afterwards, only to find themselves repeating the same pattern days or weeks later.

How do you know when it is serious?

The seriousness is not always about the amount of money involved. Two people could spend exactly the same amount but have very different relationships with money.

I would be more interested in asking what the behaviour is costing somebody beyond the money itself. Is debt increasing? Are relationships being affected? Is there growing anxiety around finances? Is shame becoming a regular feeling? Does spending feel like something that is happening almost automatically rather than as a conscious choice?

A question I sometimes find useful is: “If I didn’t buy this, what would I need instead right now?”

That can tell us a lot because if spending has become a way of managing emotions, removing it can expose the feelings that were sitting underneath all along.

What steps can you take to tackle it?

The first step is to get curious rather than beat yourself up about it. Rather than asking, “What is wrong with me?” it can be more helpful to ask, “What need am I trying to meet?”

Patterns often emerge when people begin paying attention. You may notice that spending happens after difficult or emotional conversations, periods of stress or drama, loneliness or sadness.

Creating some distance between the urge and the action can also help. Removing saved card details, deleting shopping apps, unsubscribe from market emails or trying to work to a 24-hour pause for non-essential purchases creates a small amount of space between the emotion and the behaviour.

It is also important to recognise that if spending has become a coping tool, simply removing it leaves a gap. Healthier ways of regulating our emotions need to sit alongside any practical money strategies. That might be finding your tribe, a hobby, mindfulness, coaching or therapy.

Spending addiction is rarely about somebody simply loving shopping. More often it is somebody trying to soothe, manage or escape difficult emotions and using shopping as a tool to try to do it.

Understanding that difference can shift the conversation away from blame and towards support.

I was asked by journalist Rachel Wait about shopping addition for her article in The Telegraph, and I thought I would extend it here…………….
